I planned my BFF's bridal shower this weekend. It was a 50+ guest list and I had a lot of fun planning games etc. The best part for me was designing the flower arrangements. I collected mason jars weeks in advance and hand picked what flowers I wanted, and put them together the afternoon before the shower. It was such a success, everyone had a great time. I have found that I have a bit of a knack for event planning, I really enjoy it!

This is a set I was commissioned to make this week. The earring clasps are gold filled and the chain is gold plated. I usually work with silver so it was fun to work with gold, and I ended up purchasing more gold filled earring clasps so expect to see more in the future!

Great day at the Wake Up The Earth Festival in JP this year. Forbes had a gig, and as he started to play it began to rain hence no photos. But before the music I got to check out the parade and see some neat stuff and take some photos along the way! The lovely lady with the blue face paint is my friend Emily. Her friend Shara does some really cool body art. The masks were really amazing I felt like they would have been perfect in the movie Eyes Wide Shut.

Today with my friend Leah and I went to the cape to visit the Edward Gorey House . It was so much fun to get an inside look to where such a brilliant man created and lived. These are portraits I took over the weekend on our little artist retreat. Forbes put a lot of heart and soul into it and it showed - we all had a lovely time, and I was able to get some great shots. This is an ongoing project - I'm taking portraits of Boston based musicians and plan on having a show at the Outpost 186 a space where all of these musicians have played one time or another. The show will be up in June/July and I'll have more info as it gets closer to that time.

A couple weeks ago Forbes and I took a little day trip up to Northampton. We ate at this lovely vegan/raw restaurant called Karma, which was where the first photo was taken from - the space is very cool I highly recommend checking it out. The second photo was taken at the local antique shop - where this dog Stella is top dog. She has two other dog companions, but it is obvious that shes the one who owns the place. The third photo was in one of the main parking lots. I really do love Northampton - it's a great place to visit!

Selling Photography and Life as I Know It

It's rare for me to write all that much on this blog - which is honestly how I prefer it for many reasons... BUT every now and then a rant comes echoing through the hallways of my brain desperately needing to be released.
For the past few years I have worn a couple different artist hats. I am a photographer first and always will be, and a jewelry designer second, and consequently a 'craft artist.' Having said that I would just like to state for the record that there is nothing wrong with being a craft artist - I am enjoying being one myself. Many people have asked me why I don't sell my photographs at the craft fairs I attend, or on my etsy shop, or at all. I just want to say that I do sell my photos, and if you or someone else sees a shot that you would love to have please let me know and I will sell you a print. And now for the drumroll please.....
The reason why I don't sell my photos in the same venue as my jewelry is because of my principles. That's right principles.
Each photograph that I take has for me personally a large importance. I would rather have my photographs framed and hung on a gallery wall then scaled down into greeting cards, magnets, and any other creative crafty ideas. Does this mean I don't appreciate what other artists do with there own photography? Absolutely not. I admire their willingness to show photos in non-traditional formats and applaud there determination to sell and make money. It's hard for me to really pinpoint the feeling I have about selling my photographs but I guess that is why I use my camera as a muse to show those feelings I can't quite put down in writing. It's either that or I'm just a snobby artist.

But here is the challenge for me right now and probably for the rest of my life. I work as a caregiver full time. This job is how I am able to buy the things I buy, feed my cat organic food, and live comfortably. When this job is over what will I do next? I have flirted with the idea of going back to school to get my MFA for quite some time now. I will most likely apply to a few different places that I have looked at through the years - but I can't do anything until this phase of my life is over. I imagine myself in some way or another teaching - hopefully at a college but who knows I'm no fortune teller. All I know is that life is changing around me faster then I ever imagined. My BFF is about to get married followed by having a baby. I too want to have a baby some day - heck I'd like to have more than one! But how do I still try to do what I want to do as an artist, and make enough money to sustain myself and future little ones. I'm lucky to have a husband who is brilliant and I know he can sustain our family when the time comes but I too want to be a breadwinner, and I know he understands that. It's the uncertainty that's killing me.
But I guess that is just what life is for me right now.

I've been going through the 800+ photographs that I have taken over the last week while my brother and family were up visiting. I keep coming back to these three photos because how often do you get to see 4 generations in one photo? It's funny looking at all of the photos from this shoot in a row because you can watch the progression of Charlotte (the adorable baby) touching grandpa's pocket calender to eventually almost pulling it out of his pocket. I love that little one so much it hurts. I can't wait till she gets older and I can take her to art museums and tell her all of the funny stories about her mom and dad...muahahahaha : )

Living with the elderly

As a caregiver for my grandfather it is my obligation to care for him in all aspects of his life. Lately I have been really tested with the work it takes for caring for him. About two weeks ago he began to cough - and I feared the worse. We spent a day in the hospital only to wait over 10 hours be seen for 45 min, and be sent home with yet another prescription and the prognosis of acute bronchitis.
I managed to get the flu on top of caring for him, and needless to say it has been VERY difficult. I'm finally feeling better (thanks mom) and so is he, thank G-d, and now we are again spending most of our time going to doctors appointments, resting, sitting, resting, eating... you get the picture.
When you loose your eyesight, your hearing goes bad, your appetite diminishes, your balance is off, and your always cold - the quality of life becomes a day to day struggle. This is what he is living. I wish I could press a button and make him feel alive again. At 92 I guess it's a blessing to still be breathing, and to still be able live in your own home.
I just wish there was more I could do.

This morning I saw these beautiful Coyotes hanging out in the upper lot of my grandfathers property. I ran and grabbed my telephoto lens as quickly as I could and was able to capture these three photos. I think the one on the left is a male and the one on the right is a female though I am just guessing. I love how they both looked my way at one point. So cool. Happy Tuesday!

Rock and Roll Yard Sale

For the past two years or so I have been participating in the Rock and Roll Yard Sale. It is a wonderful event full of old vinayls, diy crafts, and vintage everything. It's run by a husband and wife team that own a great little antique shop in Providence called What Cheer Antiques.
The next one is this Sunday the 13th. It will be held in the MET 1005 Main Street, in Pawtucket RI from 12 to 6 p.m. I hope you can make it! I'll be selling my antique tin Jewelry - all at great affordable prices. These photos are just a small sneak peak of my goods... : )

Lovely necklace - I don't remember the artist name but I do remember that it's in the 1700's wing. So elegant.

Charles Sheeler - painter and photographer. I first became interested in this artist in college - I love how he put his photographic mindset into his paintings - architecture, light, and space is something I'm always interested in art, and I love how he uses both.

Alexander Calder - One of my favorite artists of all time - this is from his early circus work- very kinetic and funny - I always respect an artist with a good sense of humor.
This was in one of the wings , they have nice glass hallways - it's a great place to have a break from the galleries.

Yesterday Forbes and I went to the MFA in Boston and checked out the new wing of the America's. It's a great group of American art starting from the 1700's to the present. It was nice to get some inspiration - sometimes the cold weather makes it hard to get out and shoot so going to galleries and such is a great way to continue to stay connected. I'm having a craft fair coming up on February 13th in RI - So I've been busy working on my jewelry - I'll post more info once I know more myself.

I have been working on a series of portraits of family and friends that connect to my Jewish identity. I submitted those photos to Mobius for the Prisms Chanukah Festival December 1st through the 8th, and I am happy to report that I have been accepted to show my photos. The opening is on December 1st, at Mobius from 6 to 10 p.m.

I also have been busy working on a series of new constructed realities. The inspiration came from a recent call for work at 119 Gallery in Lowell MA based on the idea of secrets, and what your art hides. In all of my constructed realities there are undertones to each image that are my own secrets, so I enjoyed making this new reality based on just that.

I'm bummed that I can't make it to the Common Ground Fair this year - it is such a wonderful event full of vivid imagery - but I just don't have enough coverage and will have to sadly to skip it. If you haven't heard of it you should check it out -it's really an amazing event that I have actually been going to since high school. But because of not being able to go, I'm glad I was at least able to go to this market that was in Maine - hey it's better then nothing!

I just recently bought a new camera - a Canon 5D Mark II - and two new lenses. My new macro is amazing - and helped me take these stunning photos of my Cousin's baby Ellie. She is such a happy baby - I hope that when it's my turn to have children they have as much joy and excitement as this little one.
On a different note my computer had been acting up - so yesterday I decided to do a photo dump onto our wireless external hard drive. I'm not even kidding it took from 10:00 a.m. till about 11:00 p.m., and then to erase the images off the computer took another few hours! I need to get better about putting the images onto the hard drive immediately and just working off of that - but woah what a long day yesterday. It made looking at my new photos today that much more special! Happy Friday everyone!

It has been a very stressful few weeks working for my grandfather Putnam. I have called 911 twice and brought him to the hospital myself once. He is a really amazing guy - but he is slowing down a bit and it's scary. I know that he will die, and I am honestly at peace with that - even if I have no idea when, he is almost 92 years old and has lived an amazing life. I posted this photo because Forbes, my husband, is one strong force in my life, who helps keep me sane most of the time. I wanted to say that I feel really lucky. I don't usually get super personal with my posts, but it has been so difficult for me lately, that I just don't know what I would do without him. Thank-you hun, you are appreciated.

Years ago, when I was just getting to know my dad Michael, he bought me my first pet - a hamster. Since then he has always won my heart... But that's not why I posted this. My mom found this comic in her local newspaper and scanned it because it reminded her of me. Now Amanda was an awesome hamster, she was white with brown spots, and she lived for three years! (which is a long time for a hamster) She was a very talented escape artist, chewing her way to freedom out of the plastic confinements of her little home. I remember one night my brother Ben and I searched the whole house for her, and right before the 'rents came home I found her perched on top of one of the floor heaters in the corner, washing her face like nothing had happened. Well, once she died I discovered something that was a bit shocking.... Amanda was actually a BOY! So when I buried her in a decorated shoe box I wrote William on it, and apologized for thinking he was a she his whole life. No wonder he kept escaping!! Anyway, I hope everyone is keeping cool in this little MA heat wave, and remember never guess a hamsters gender! : )

After the parade, Forbes and I took a stoll in the common. I was so excited when I saw the wedding, I just couldn't resist taking a picture. The tulips were a real hot item everyone was taking photos of them and having them stand in front of them. I must admit they are really pretty.
